There’s a bit of a shift happening in the way NDIS funding is being rolled out, and if you’re a provider, it’s worth knowing what’s coming so you’re not caught off guard.
Starting May 19, 2025, the NDIA is changing when participants get access to their funding. The total amount of funding in a plan isn’t changing. That part stays exactly the same, rather than giving participants access to all of it upfront for the full year, it’s going to be released in smaller chunks, usually every three months.
This is something that’s been in the pipeline for a while. A lot of participants have said managing their budgets over 12 months can be stressful. Some run out early, others are worried about overspending. So the new approach is meant to make budgeting a bit easier and more predictable.
Now, this isn’t a blanket change for everyone overnight. It’ll only apply to new plans or reassessments that happen after May 19. So if someone’s currently in the middle of their plan, nothing changes for them until they go through a review or start a new one. And before anything is changed, the NDIA will actually chat with the participant to figure out what works best for their situation.
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Plans will often be split into three-month funding periods, but it can vary.
- The total plan value stays the same — this is purely about timing.
- This could apply to the whole plan or just certain parts of it.
- It’s all based on individual needs, preferences, and risks (like overspending, fraud, or financial pressure).
Why This Matters for You:
As a provider, understanding this shift is crucial for:
- Monitoring cash flow and payment patterns that may be affected by staggered funding.
- Supporting participants to navigate these changes confidently.
- Planning service delivery to align with revised funding release schedules.
